I became enchanted by Matisse this month, especially his latter works which were mainly gouache-painted paper cuttings. This is my head nod and salute to him, imagining what he may have created, had he ever visited Colorado and been intrigued by our wildlife.
16x20" acrylic-painted, cut, and collaged Arches paper.
These pieces were made and included in Cottonwood's Pure Color, Bright Light -- Works Inspired by Henri Matisse show.
And finally, a quote from ol' Henri himself:
"What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling or disturbing subject matter, an art which could be for every mental worker, for the businessman as well as the man of letters; for example, a soothing, calming influence on the mind, something like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue."
